Heli Aust Helicopters came to the rescue of a budding young artist during the annual Sculpture by the Sea at Bondi beach Sydney. The art installation was of a giant drinking straw, placed in the water just off shore, and was logistically one of the more difficult helicopter lifting projects that we have done recently.

While the sculpture itself was not a difficult object to lift (weighing in at just over 700 kilos) it was the underwater component of the project that made the pilots job so difficult.
With normal lifting the pilot will generally have a fixed reference point to focus on to know if the helicopter is moving position and can then correct things accordingly. However with the mounting point being under the water, and the swell constantly changing and moving the sculpture, it took excellent communication between the helicopter crewman stationed on the dive boat and the pilot to ensure the project was a success.
In addition the skill of the dive crew in signalling to the helicopter crew by raising a hand out of the water, and also by using guide ropes to manoeuvre the straw into its mounting tube was exemplary.
