Chopper to the Rescue as Tree Removal Crane
A large Acacia tree that threatened to fall on a shadehouse at Hornsby's Lisgar Gardens was removed by helicopter last week. Murray Bolan, of Bolans Tree Service, praised the council for embracing the idea.

He said using a helicopter was the "smartest and most cost effective" way to remove remove the rotting tree and prevented the gardens being closed for some time.

A council spokesman said the tree had fungal root and had been monitored for more than six months.

"Due to the severity of the fungal rot (which was causing dieback of the canopy and the tree to lean) the tree posed a serious safety risk to visitors," he said.

"The steepness and density of Lisgar Gardens meant that it was impossible to remove the tree by crane or cherry picker."

"Council sought quotes from arborists and found that removing the tree by helicopter was the most cost effective and suitable method."

A 45m cable was attached to the helicopter to ensure the heritage camellias were not damaged by the downdraft. Tree sections were taken off site and chipped for recycling.
